Built on ActivityPub, a Pixelfed account is part of the fediverse, so it can follow and interact with people on other federated services such as Mastodon. Millions of people already share across this decentralized network.

Pixelfed is licensed under the AGPL and can be self-hosted, including a one-click install through YunoHost. It is built on PHP and Laravel.
